Let’s have a talk. Just you and me. The 2024 NFL Draft is in the books. You can make the choice now. You can choose to read other people’s draft grades. You know, the grades where you get lied to and nobody has the balls to hand out anything lower than a C for any of the teams. OR you can read mine where I tell the truth. The choice is yours.
By the way, how come nobody grades Mel Kiper’s draft grades after the fact? I’ll happily stack up my resume compared to anybody else out there. It’s not a battle they will win based on past evidence. We’re starting things off with the AFC East. Let’s do this thing.
Round 2, Pick 33: Keon Coleman, WR, Florida State
Round 2, Pick 60: Cole Bishop, S, Utah
Round 3, Pick 95: DeWayne Carter, DL, Duke
Round 4, Pick 128: Ray Davis, RB, Kentucky
Round 5, Pick 141: Sedrick Van Pran-Granger, OL, Georgia
Round 5, Pick 160: Edefuan Ulofoshio, LB, Washington
Round 5, Pick 168: Javon Solomon, LB, Troy
Round 6, Pick 204: Tylan Grable, OT, UCF
Round 6, Pick 219: Daequan Hardy, CB, Penn State
Round 7, Pick 221: Travis Clayton, OL, International Pathway Program (England)
I thought Brandon Beane genuinely did a good job. It was far from perfect but he made some strategic moves and even pushed some picks to 2025. Moving down twice and still landing Keon Coleman is a win. Coleman feels like a perfect fit for Josh Allen too. I think they should have confidence he will turn into a top tier weapon.
I love the Van Pran pick too. I have no idea how that guy was there in the 5th round but that’s a huge get. Consider that they got this pick moving down one spot with Carolina. They also used the pick they got for Ryan Bates and sent it to Chicago for a 2025 4th round. Either way, to land a future starting center in round five is stealing.
Made some really good depth pieces. The roster got so much better after this draft. I think everyone they picked minus the flier offensive line pieces they took deep will help this team right away. Not perfect but a solid job.
Round 1, Pick 21: Chop Robinson, Edge, Penn State
Round 2, Pick 55: Patrick Paul, OT, Houston
Round 4, Pick 120: Jaylen Wright, RB, Tennessee
Round 5, Pick 158: Mohamed Kamara, DL, Colorado State
Round 6, Pick 184: Malik Washington, WR, Virginia
Round 6, Pick 198: Patrick McMorris, S, California
Round 7, Pick 241: Tahj Washington, WR, USC
I would love to go higher but I can’t. Chris Grier remains absolutely delulu. The Dolphins picked two slot receivers and one offensive lineman. How Grier didn’t get punched in the face for that remains a mystery to me. Either way, offensive line was the biggest need on this team and Patrick Paul could very well be a bust. Has talent and length but lacks knee bend. Could be a total flameout. If that’s the only offensive lineman you land in the entire draft, that’s such a failure for this team.
Some of these picks are going to turn out to be awesome. Getting Chop Robinson and Mohamed Kamara is awesome. That’s some serious pass rushing depth right there. I also really like getting both Washington’s to play the slot. One of them should be really good.
I just can’t go higher than a C+. Trading up for Jaylen Wright in the third round when you have two reliable backs on the roster is brain-dead. Ditto for landing one offensive lineman.
Round 1, Pick 3: Drake Maye, QB, UNC
Round 2, Pick 37: Ja’Lynn Polk, WR, Washington
Round 3, Pick 68: Caedan Wallace, OL, Penn State
Round 4, Pick 103: Layden Robinson, OL, Texas A&M
Round 4, Pick 110: Javon Baker, WR, UCF
Round 6, Pick 180: Marcellas Dial, CB, South Carolina
Round 6, Pick 193: Joe Milton III, QB, Tennessee
Round 7, Pick 231: Jaheim Bell, TE, Florida
I would have went higher but I thought the Patriots left some serious meat on the bone. Landing Drake Maye is cool. I just hope they take care of him. Pairing him with Joe Milton to be the backup is also awesome.
Look, some of these picks I don’t mind. Jaheim Bell in the 7th round is going to be a toy they probably get something out of. I also like doubling up on receiver. Javon Baker has some talent. I just hated the middle of their draft. Ja’Lynn Polk at the top of the second is a crazy reach. Especially when you consider Troy Franklin went in round four. I’m not sure either of the offensive linemen they got are good. Potential is there but both were really inconsistent in college.
Things are moving in the right direction but I’m not sure the rest of this class propels them to be a winner. A strong draft would have if Maye is ready to go right away. This class doesn’t quite do it for me.
Round 1, Pick 11: Olu Fashanu, OT, Penn State
Round 3, Pick 65: Malachi Corley, WR, Western Kentucky
Round 4, Pick 134: Braelon Allen, RB, Wisconsin
Round 5, Pick 171: Jordan Travis, QB, Florida State
Round 5, Pick 173: Isaiah Davis, RB, South Dakota State
Round 5, Pick 176: Qwan’tez Stiggers, CB, Toronto Argonauts
Round 7, Pick 257: Jaylen Key, S, Alabama
Credit to Joe Douglas for moving down a few times and collecting for next year. I just hate this draft. Forget about the first round pick part of it. I get the Fashanu pick. He should come in and be a quality starter at tackle eventually. Everything else was trash.
The Corley pick is fine but they’re sorely mistaken if they think they got the next Deebo. He’ll be a fine slot receiver for them. Everything else I just don’t understand.
How many running backs do you need? I’m a Braelon Allen fan but does this mean you’re giving up on Israel Abanikanda? Isaiah Davis just stinks and that was basically flushing a pick down the toilet. Jordan Travis can be a backup maybe. Not sure why you’re signing Tyrod Taylor then. Am I supposed to get excited about a CFL corner and a UAB transfer that finished at Alabama?
Not sure this is good enough to propel the Jets as a contender. As if losing the second round pick from the Rodgers deal wasn’t devastating enough. Did they get a single guy who will help them on defense?
