Troy Fautanu 2024 NFL Draft Profile
Let’s get a little spicy. We just covered the profile of Roger Rosengarten, and we now look to the more touted of Washington tackles in Troy Fautanu. Fautanu has been mocked as high as the late teens in the 2024 NFL Draft, and I couldn’t disagree more. Something just doesn’t itch my brain properly. Or maybe I don’t know how to process his game. Let’s try and work through this together.
Fautanu, a former four-star recruit out of Henderson, Nevada committed to the Huskies in 2018(!), and got to the school in 2020. He would not see significant playing time until 2022, when he took over the role of Left Tackle while also playing inside at Guard. Over the course of 1,700+ snaps, he would allow 27 Quarterback hurries and two sacks.
Troy Fautanu had a very solid NFL Combine performance, I’ll give him that. The footwork is very good, knee bend is where you want it, has some short area burst that you can work with. We know how much I love Offensive Linemen who can play multiple positions along the line. He lands his punches with such strong hands that can easily disrupt his defender. 29 reps on the Bench Press speaks to how physical and strong he is.
I don’t know, man. Maybe I am not seeing what others are seeing. Fautanu isn’t great in either pass pro but especially not run blocking. Doesn’t have that drive to keep moving forward, I have concerns about that motor. This is a position where you need to be 100% every single play. Hand placement is all over the place. If the Washington offense didn’t get the ball out insanely fast, I guarantee you the sack total would be much higher. Defenders can get inside on him and get him on his heels because his hands are never consistent.
I’m not necessarily *out* on Troy Fautanu, but I will let others take him in the first round. There are five other tackles I would rather have in round one of the 2024 NFL Draft ahead of him. I do have a second-round grade on Fautanu, and would probably try and talk to him about moving inside to Guard, especially if I have a stud at the position he can learn from. He may turn into a solid starter, but I wouldn’t count on it right away.
