Timo Meier: The Perfect New Jersey Devil?
It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that the San Jose Sharks are rebuilding. Their general manager Mike Grier has even admitted as much in regard to Erik Karlsson. The Sharks are likely shopping a number of their players including star winger Timo Meier. When it comes to projecting a Meier trade, the New Jersey Devils simply make more sense than any other team in the league.
That Swiss connection is real. A line pairing that features Meier and Nico Hischier feels almost too good to be true. Meier and Hischier are two of the premier Swiss players in the entire world. The styles match too. Hischier is that classic 200-foot player that can be the driving force. Meier is there to be his tag team partner and put the puck in the back of the net. What more could you want if you’re New Jersey?
A scoring winger is truly the only thing that the Devils need. Goaltending has been fixed with Vitek Vanecek. The blue line is outstanding and fill with depth throughout. They’re deep down the middle and Jack Hughes is turning into a full-fledged super-duper star. One guy that can put the puck in the net and New Jersey becomes scary…
That man should have been Johnny Gaudreau, but he was too brain dead. I still for the life of me can’t understand why he picked Columbus but he clearly has the wrong people in his corner giving him advice. We knew this at the time. The Chinese farmer always says maybe. Maybe the universe needed Gaudreau to make a brain dead move so the Meier move could fully come to fruition.
The Devils have assets to get this done. Plenty of cap space. Plenty of young prospects to move in a deal. Not just that but Meier is also in a tricky spot with his contract. Meier is due a $10 million qualifying offer or he can become an unrestricted free agent. Long story short, Meier can force his hand here. Matthew Tkachuk forced his way to Florida after holding a qualifying offer tag this Summer.
Let’s make this happen already. Pick up the phone and start dialing. Timo Meier is instant egg plant emoji for every Devils fan out there. It’s the type of move that would make their fan base feel like they’re truly in the mix to compete for Stanley Cups. Let’s just call it into the league office already!
