Sharks defenseman Erik Karlsson talks about a possibility to contending team before trade deadline

Erik Karlsson responded, “Wants to Win” when being asked about the potential of being moved from the San Jose Sharks at the trade deadline, according to theScore.

“I will never sway from that: I want to win,” he said during a recent appearance on the “Got Yer Back” podcast with Pierre LeBrun and Ryan Rishaug. “I think as you get older and you’ve been around for a longer time, you realize it’s not as easy as it looks and you gotta hit it at the right time. Obviously, if it does happen, then I hope that I do.”

Karlsson, who is 32 years old, is steering toward the end of his Hall-of-Fame career. If there is a window to hoist Stanley Cup, it is now. With the San Jose Sharks, he will not be doing that this year. The former 15th overall pick in the 2008 NHL draft has been stuffing the stat sheet this year with the Sharks, seeming to be their only sort of hope in a pitiful season. His numbers will hawk great interest for several contenders, but with his massive contract of $11.5 million a year, it is quite the cap hit and a daunting task to pull the trigger on him.

Karlsson hopes the Sharks can pull back to the surface after a disappointing start to the veteran’s season. “We’ll see where we’re at, but I like the way it’s going, I know that much,” he said. “I know that the hires that they’ve made and the people that they’ve put in charge are doing a great job in moving in the right direction. … I know that the future here is going to be really bright.” Via theScore.

He also made certain double-edged sword comments within the Sharks organization when discussing the future and trade possibilities.

“I just hope that it’s within my timeline. If it’s not, that’s a different discussion and that’s where we haven’t really gotten yet, I don’t think. It’s also a tricky part because you never know; it could work out really fast or it could be a little bit of a longer thing. Sometimes that’s a gamble you have to take.” Via theScore.
