The NFL Wants To Expand…Rapidly

According to Pro Football Talk, the NFL has big plans for the near future: it wants to play regular-season games in Germany by either 2022 or 2023. Peter King of Pro Football Talk noted that Germany is the NFL’s fastest-growing market, as roughly 2.2 million viewers from Germany watched the Super Bowl this past year, a staggering number for a singular European country.

Germany is also the world’s fourth-biggest economy, so Roger Goodell and the NFL expanding the game to Germany is prudent. The first game in Germany would likely be played in Allianz Arena, where the soccer team Bayern Munich plays.

Why Not Asia or Australia?

Playing football in Europe is easier than in other locations because Europe is relatively close and is densely populated. NFL teams can simply fly out of an airport on the East Coast to get to Europe, and with countries like Germany and England having both thriving economies and an emerging desire for American Football, the NFL has little incentive not to expand further into Europe.

Other locations are not as practical. Australia already has a substitute for NFL: rugby, and Australia and Asia are too impractical to allow for team travel to and from within the grueling NFL schedule. That much travel time would wear anyone down and would give teams coming back from overseas games a severe disadvantage in their next games.
