It’s So Stupid MLB Teams Can’t Trade Standard Draft Picks

This sport really is run by a moron and it’s so sad. Rob Manfred sucks for so many reasons and today’s topic is really just the tip of the iceberg. It’s so damn stupid why MLB teams can’t trade standard draft picks. It’s an archaic rule that continues to prevent the sport from growing.

Joel Sherman is my favorite baseball writer to read because he usually finds a way to hit the nail on the head. All that really needs to be done is to share this small excerpt but feel free to read his full column because it’s really good.

“The Mariners have the 29th and 30th picks in the draft Sunday night.”

“By rule, they cannot trade the 29th.”

“By rule, they can trade the 30th.”

“So, we have a starting point to discuss a stupid rule.”

Amen, Joel. At least someone is finally talking about how stupid this rule is. There are hundreds of archaic rules in baseball that suck but this one really needs to be fixed.

MLB is already fighting a losing battle. In basically every other sport, the guys getting picked in the draft become familiar faces with their team right away. Even 5th round picks in the NFL aren’t getting stashed in the minors. As a fan, you see the player drafted and he’s a visible face on the team right away.

Not baseball. These guys getting picked in the draft are totally out of the picture for four or five years. From a marketing standpoint, it’s hard to get people excited about the draft for that very reason. It’s hard to get fans excited about a high school player you won’t see for YEARS.

Using these picks as trade bait to land high end MLB talent would make the sport more exciting. It would also be more of a must see event if MLB players were getting dealt for these picks.

I think the most hilarious part is that in Sherman’s column, the Players Association is in favor of trading draft picks. It’s MLB that opposes it. If that doesn’t tell you how dead Manfred’s brain is, you’re never going to get it.

It’s time. Change the rule. Please for the love of god. Someone needs to save this sport one day at a time before Manfred burns it to the ground. The MLB Draft is on today and no one will watch. Except it shouldn’t be the case and it’s a really easy fix.
