Stop Pretending There Is A Trade Market For Brock Boeser

Do we really have to sit here and pretend that there is a huge market for Brock Boeser? Are we really going to live in this imaginary world where all these contenders are lining up for the services for the Canucks forward? I won’t do it. I hope you don’t either.

In case you missed it, Boeser was going to be a healthy scratch last night until an injury forced him back into the lineup. Then forced into action, Boeser scored the game tying goal against Arizona in an eventual overtime win. The kind of story line that will get the NHL fan boys to rally around him. The only problem is, it doesn’t excuse Boeser’s performance this year. Boeser was going to be made a scratch because he’s one of the worst players in the league this year.

You see all those player logos in that chart? There’s a couple of Ducks, a Coyote, a Blue Jacket, and Brock Boeser. All in the category of caved in. Boeser has been a deterrent on the ice and I’m not sure it’s arguable. +/- isn’t everything but it’s not a coincidence his -13 is the single worst mark on the team. That’s saying something given this Canucks defense.

Rumor on the street is Vancouver has given Boeser permission to seek a trade. That’s all fine and dandy. I don’t blame the Canucks for doing so. My question would be, who the hell wants him?

Boeser, 25, has 15 points in 19 games. 11 of which are assists. His CF% sits at a paltry 46.4. Boeser’s point production sat at a mediocre 46 points a year ago and seem to be trending in the wrong direction as he ages. He’s also due an AAV of $6.5 million through the 2024-25 season. The Canucks can give permission to seek a trade all they want. I just don’t know where the agent has the authority to make the team retain salary. Maybe I missed that somewhere in the sports agent handbook.

If you know, you know.

Maybe the Canucks can find a taker here but I just don’t see it. Who’s getting talked into giving up real assets for a player that’s struggling while carrying a massive cap hit? Good luck with all that.
