When Kirk Cousins had to sit out this past week due to testing positive for COVID, it seemed logical that Kellen Mond would end up getting the start. Instead, that duty went to Sean Mannion who doesn’t have a super lengthy resume. We now know why Mond didn’t get even a consideration to start.
Mike Zimmer had some choice words for Mond in a recent presser. Let’s just say Zimmer has no desire to see Mond on the field:
“not particularly.”
What’s funnier is another reporter asked Zimmer why he didn’t want to see Mond during the final week of the regular season. He responded with “I see him every day.”
Yikes…
Mond did see limited playing time against the Packers Sunday Night in his debut. The former Texas A&M quarterback went 2-3 for five yards. He also made this throw which likely served as the last straw.
It’s clear and obvious that based on practice, Zimmer has already seen enough. Kellen Mond will never be the guy for the Vikings. Of course, Zimmer could be fired but it still seems fairly obvious the entire Vikings organization thinks he stinks. Otherwise, Zimmer would have never been allowed to say those comments and probably would have been forced to start Mond.
This has a very Jordan Love feel to it minus the fact that the Vikings only spent a third round pick on Mond. Love has had some nightmare practices according to reports and Green Bay is in no rush to get him under center. Minnesota obviously doesn’t have Aaron Rodgers but Mond’s struggles obviously make you appreciate Kirk Cousins a bit more in a weird way.
Is it too early to declare Kellen Mond a bust? At minimum, it’s impossible to not worry. Of course, we knew Mond was trash because he was in college so none of this is surprising.
