Kieran Trippier Prepared to Join Newcastle United
Atletico Madrid right back and England international Kieran Trippier is preparing a move to Newcastle United, as first reported by Sky Sports’ Keith Downie and then confirmed by football insider Fabrizio Romano.
Per Downie, the deal is worth close to £12 million – $16.2 million – with potential add-ons available in the future. The transfer is the first significant purchase by the club’s new Saudi ownership. The 31-year-old joined Atletico in Summer 2019 from Tottenham Hotspur and has appeared in 19 matches this season.
Atletico manager Diego Simeone said he would have loved to keep Trippier with the team, but emphasized that in professional football today, you can’t hold players hostage.
“Kieran Trippier is an extraordinary footballer who has given us a lot and we will try to keep him. We want him to stay, he’s an important player, but nowadays, when a player wants to leave, you can’t force them to stay. You can’t retain them.”

Trippier is nearing a return to England and the Premier League, with hopes that his arrival will sure up a Newcastle defense that has conceded a league-worst 42 goals. Halfway through the season, Newcastle sit 19th in the table and two points behind 17th-place Watford, as relegation prospects increase with every passing match.
