Maybe I’m jumping the gun on this one but it sure feels like a fair question to ask after the Bruins traded Brad Marchand to division rival Florida for a pretty stinky return. If Boston is actually going to go through the rebuild process, should David Pastrnak request a trade?
Look, maybe the Bruins can do what the Washington Capitals did. Put together a smart retool and quickly get back in the mix. I just don’t believe that’s going to happen. Based on Don Sweeney’s draft history, I’m going to go with there’s no shot he’s the guy to successfully dig Boston out of this current mess they’re in.
If anything, I’d blame Sweeney as the reason why this team started to tank. Bruce Cassidy clearly wasn’t the problem after winning a Cup in Vegas. The Linus Ullmark trade was incredibly stupid and essentially gift-wrapped Ottawa a spot in the playoffs. Free agency decisions with Nikita Zadorov and Elias Lindholm bombed miserably. We can go up and down the list all day here. As long as Sweeney remains in charge, this puppy is going to stay down in the dumps.
Let’s also not forget that the Bruins have grinded down essentially every single player on the roster in terms of a contract extension. Marchand got traded for that reason. The Jeremy Swayman thing was a joke. Pastrnak thing went down to the wire. At some point, if losing really starts, why show loyalty?
Here’s my question. What if the Bruins can’t turn this thing around? I’m talking not within a 3-5 year period. Pastrnak is 28-years-old. If you’re going to trade Marchand, isn’t the idea of trading a superstar winger for an absolute haul on the table too to really kickstart this rebuild?
Food for thought.
