Before I even start here, let’s get one thing out of the way now. Don Sweeney is an idiot. Always has been. His track record in the draft is abysmal and everything he touches in general turns to hell. Sweeney should have been fired the second he made Bruce Cassidy the fall guy only to watch Butch win a Cup in Vegas pretty much immediately. The icing on the cake is he continues to sound like an absolute fool talking about Jeremy Sway and his looming contract situation.
It’s a super long press conference. Feel free to watch it if you wish but I’ll do my best to list out some of the spark notes.
Sweeney is essentially blaming Swayman for not taking the Bruins’ offer. The Spittin Chiclets guys did their best to gather information on the Bruins offer. It’s predictably low ball city.
Sweeney publically blasted the “Spitting Up On Yourself” podcast and sounded totally angry about it. You could tell there was at least some truth to the report or Sweeney wouldn’t have gotten as upset as he did.
“It’s been reported we’ve been incommunicative. That’s far from the truth… I think you’d be hard pressed to find anybody in the league where I’d spend three weeks not returning a phone call… I’m not talking specifics. You’re just not going to get them. I think it’s bullshit that somebody says I wouldn’t return a call for three weeks. That’s inaccurate.”
Sweeney can say whatever he wants but blaming Swayman for not being in camp is embarrassing. Blaming the Chiclets guys for leaking contract info is also embarrassing. The truth of the matter is, this idiot threw his leverage out the window when he traded Linus Ullmark for a bag of chips. It put all the leverage in Swayman’s corner and the price has only skyrocketed.
Swayman, 25, posted a .933 SV% in the playoffs and looks like one of if not the best young goalie in the game. Frankly, Sweeney should have extended him last year but they haggled over nonsense and took it to arbitration. If Sweeney took care of business last offseason, this isn’t even a story right now. Oh, and Swayman has no reason to sign for anything less than $8.5 million per year, and even that number is doing them a favor.
