This was supposed to be “their year.” Well, every year is supposed to be the year for Cowboys fans, but I digress. Fans were riding with the Dallas Cowboys this offseason as a favorite to win the NFC East, and that took a major hit when news broke that quarterback Dak Prescott is set to have thumb surgery. With how well the rest of the division looked yesterday, it begs the question: should the Cowboys trade for 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo? I will break down why and why not.
When you look at this Cowboys’ roster, there are some really nice pieces on both sides of the ball. The running back room is solid with Ezekiel Elliott and Tony Pollard. While the Dallas offensive line is not what it once was, it is starting to look okay again, anchored by right guard Zack Martin. However, a big question mark was the receiver position. With Amari Cooper leaving this offseason and the injury to Michael Gallup, essentially leaving just CeeDee Lamb and rookie Jalen Tolbert to start the year. Most folks would agree that the Cowboys should have picked up a vet receiver before the start of the season.
The defense is interesting, with the main focal point in Micah Parsons. Parsons should be a candidate for Defensive Player of the Year in 2022 and will look to build off a great rookie season. Cornerback Trevon Diggs is, well, Trevon Diggs. Some people believe he is a stud, while others think the exact opposite — that’s a discussion for another time. He is still someone to look out for, though. A talented defensive line will help get after the opposing quarterback as well. I say all this because you would think after hearing a team like this, they should absolutely move for a starting-level signal caller.
I was out on the Dallas Cowboys in 2022. There are too many question marks on this roster. Prescott has to perform well this year it’s really his last chance I believe. Yes, adding Garoppolo would steer this ship back on course, in theory. But you can’t expect a QB to just be added to a new system and think he is going to perform at a high-level in the first week. That’s just foolish. It would take at least three to four weeks before he could start to feel comfortable in this offense. I also don’t love any of the coaches for that matter. There are too many issues with this team to fully believe they could make a run at a Wild Card berth, or a deep playoff run, so why would they trade picks to bring in a quarterback for just a few months?
It would make zero sense for the Cowboys to trade for Jimmy Garoppolo. I know the reality of this team, and if they are not a division winner with Prescott, they won’t be with Garoppolo either. I know this is hard news to hear if you are a Cowboys fan but just accept it. Trading for another QB would just set this team back more than it already is. Wake up and realize it might be time to tear it all down and start over. The Eagles are here to stay, the Commanders, when healthy, are going to be solid. These Giants might just turn into something under Brian Daboll. It’s over. Press that reset button.
