I don’t think I even need to bury the lede here. Yes, the Celtics should trade for Jrue Holiday. Of course, they should be in on this. It’s a matter of how much it’s going to cost and how Boston can make sure they win the bidding war.
I actually think Portland did pretty well on the Damian Lillard trade. In reality, they’re going to get the draft capital they wanted. They just are going to have to make two transactions to make it happen. A lot of reports are already surfacing about what it could potentially cost. Chris Mannix says it should cost two first round picks.
Unlike some contenders, Boston has a pretty big arsenal of draft capital to swing in a trade. They have two first round picks next year including Golden State’s from the Marcus Smart deal. They have their full complement of picks and just acquired four second rounders at the draft. All indications are Portland wants to stockpile picks for this rebuild and the Celtics certainly have the ammo to oblige.
With that in mind, what would a possible trade package look like? It’s actually easier than you think to construct.
The trade machine hasn’t updated yet but a package of Malcolm Brogdon, Al Horford, and Payton Pritchard gets you to within 324K of what Holiday earns next year. That gets the deal done. The C’s can swap out Pritchard for another low salary guy if they want to. At that point it’s about sending over the picks to make Portland happy.
The Celtics need to get this done for so many reasons.
A: Brogdon is miserable and needs to be sent packing ASAP. They never should have traded for him, to begin with. He’s also medically broken and Holiday usually finds a way to play 65 games every year.
B: The Celtics lost so much grit this offseason. I don’t know how they’re going to function without Marcus Smart. Adding Holiday would be a hell of a replacement except he has a more reliable shot.
C: Odds are the Celtics are going to have to beat the Bucks to win the title. How do you do it? How about starting by trading for Holiday? You want to talk about a guy that’s going to have a chip on his shoulder? How about the revenge factor that series would have? That alone makes it worth it.
