Malcolm Brogdon-Celtics relationship growing worse

After a blockbuster trade shook the Boston Celtics organization ahead of NBA Free Agency, guard Malcolm Brogdon is facing some of the ripple effects of the trade. It is being reported that Brogdon’s relationship is growing worse and worse as the point guard was expected to be traded away this offseason.

When the Celtics were in trade talks with the Washington Wizards for big man Kristaps Porzingis, one consistent name that reportedly showed up in the initial trade details was Malcolm Brogdon.

Brogdon, however, became a negative rather than a positive in trade talks.

Boston assumed he could squeak by in the trade, but that couldn’t become more wrong in retrospect. With the guard’s injury history and already looming one at the time, he became the roadblock for the trade. No one wanted him. The injury and history of them quickly halted the trade and, in doing so, halted the growing relationship with the Celtics.

The reigning sixth man of the year’s relationship with the Celtics grew dark after essentially knowing he would be off the team and shipped off. Now, both sides are feeling the tension.

“I think he understands, but (it) doesn’t mean he’s not upset about it,” Gary Washburn of The Boston Globe said, according to CLNS Media’s “Celtics Beat” podcast. “So I was told he was not happy with how things went down. Now, does that increase his level of mistrust in the Celtics organization?”

Not only was the trade the problem, but playing time. Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla hardly played the veteran point guard at all this season compared to years before. Brogdon saw a seven-minute deduction in playing time in 2022-23 compared to the year prior in moving to the bench.

Mazzulla has now contributed to the situation at hand, but adding his own thesis.

“There’s a healing process, there’s a listening process and there’s a process toward where we’re at and where we have to get to,” Mazzulla said in July, per CLNS Media video. “We’ve had some conversations as an organization, but at the same time we understand the situation that it was, and as the healing process goes on, we’re continuing to move forward as well as we can.”

How do you think this situation resolves itself? Let us know in the comments.
