Should The Bears Draft Bryce Young?

The Bears are on the clock. Chicago owns the first overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. It’s a decision that will alter the course of history forever. There are only two real options on the table. Take Bryce Young or trade down and really build this thing around Justin Fields. Both sides of the coin can be argued but conventional wisdom would side with option B. It’s a rare opportunity to own the first pick while owning an incumbent franchise quarterback.

Ryan Poles might be a liar but as of right now, it appears that Chicago is leaning toward passing on Bryce Young or any other quarterback with that first pick. Of course, a lot can change by April. Meanwhile, check out Fanduel for the latest NFL picks for 2023.

“We’re going to do the same as we’ve always done — we’re going to evaluate the draft class,” Poles said, “and I would say this: I would have to be absolutely blown away to make that type of decision.”

“I’m excited for the direction he’s going. … He knows where he has to improve, I think he mentioned that the other day. So we’re excited about his development and where he goes next.”

“It’s hard to identify that right now,” Poles said. “But I always go back to the premium positions: We’re always gonna look at pass rushers, we’re gonna look at offensive lineman, corners. I always start with the premium positions to see, you know, are we good enough in those? And then move on from there.”

Let me play devil’s advocate for a second. If they think Bryce Young is better than Justin Fields, then that should probably be their pick. Fields has value right now given how he’s played in this awful situation. You could probably fetch a first round pick plus more for Fields. This would help fill out holes on your roster and allow you to reset the clock when it comes time to play your QB. Chicago has already wasted two years of Fields’ cheap labor seasons. The contract has to play a part.
