The Oilers are facing a serious cap crunch and have to decide what to do after the Blues sent in an offer sheet for Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway. Frankly, Broberg would have gotten an offer sheet much sooner if I was a GM in the league but that’s a story for another day. Edmonton got the ball rolling to free up space and they wisely decided Cody Ceci was going to be the cap casualty.
The Oilers are trading Ceci and a third round pick just to get rid of him to San Jose. In return, the Oilers will receive Ty Emberson.
Mark Spector of Sportsnet was the first to report the news. He adds that the expectation is that the Oilers will match on Broberg while allowing Holloway to leave.
In another minor move, Edmonton sent a fourth round pick for Vasily Podkolzin in a separate deal with the Canucks. The Oilers will get a third round pick for failing to match on Holloway. Broberg will likely now get settled in on the second line D pair with Darnell Nurse, which is what happened at the end of the playoff run last year.
Just so the record shows, if I were running the Oilers, Ceci would have been gone a long time ago. If Edmonton had upgraded his spot on the roster last year, they may have won the Cup. He’s a bad hockey player, not interpretation is needed. If you need one, here is his most recent player card.
He stinks… which is why dummy Mike Grier was happy to take him.
