The Oilers Need To Get Rid Of Cody Ceci
As of this moment as I’m writing this the Oilers are on a 15-game heater. The coaching change to Kris Knoblauch appears to have totally turned the season around. Edmonton finally looks like they have mimicked the zone defensive structure that Bruce Cassidy used to defeat them in the playoffs a year ago. With that said, the on-ice personnel still needs to improve and that starts by getting rid of Cody Ceci.
I don’t know who needs to hear this but Ceci is terrible. The guy brings almost nothing to the table. He also has no business playing top-pair minutes. Ceci, 30, has 13 assists and no goals in 44 games this year.
I’m just going to plug in JFresh’s tweet because I think he nailed it. What more needs to be said here?
Edmonton already has the scariest duo on the planet with McDavid and Draisaitl. Improving the back end is all the team needs to do to secure the Stanley Cup. That starts by bringing in a guy like Chris Tanev to replace the shortcomings of Ceci.
Furthermore, the Oilers should be focused on trying to make Darnell Nurse a better player. Part of the reason why the Oilers haven’t gotten the job done is because Nurse is overpaid and not good enough to be a number-one defenseman. How do you get Nurse to play better? Doesn’t it start by improving his D partner? Any sort of upgrade over Ceci should also bring a better Nurse to the table.
This deadline should be viewed as pretty straightforward for the Oilers. Get rid of the Ceci and Jack Campbell cap hits to improve the team. Getting an upgrade over what Ceci is just might make or break the Stanley Cup.
