We have known this news was probably coming down the pipeline. However, now it’s officially official. Shannon Sharpe is officially joining ESPN to debate Stephen A Smith. The former Hall of Fame tight end will debate Stephen A on First Take twice a week.
The New York Post was the first to report the news:
“First Take” will have a new wrinkle this Fall.
Shannon Sharpe will square off against Stephen A. Smith on Mondays and Tuesdays on the ESPN debate program during football season, The Post has learned.
This shouldn’t be viewed as a surprise. Stephen A wanted this to happen and got his wish. Sharpe has also spoken in the past that he was more than open to join First Take. Sharpe, 55, left FS1 and Undisputed back in late May.
As I wrote in the Kevin Garnett post (speaking of another name that Stephen A wants to add to the mix), it sure looks like the cast around Stephen A is much better than the one Skip Bayless has.
As of right now, Kendrick Perkins, JJ Redick, Chris “Mad Dog” Russo, Dan Orlovsky, Domonique Foxworth, Kimberley Martin, Marcus Spears, Mina Kimes, and Ryan Clark are on ESPN’s roster that have contributed to First Take in the past.
Compare that to the method that Skip Bayless has copied with bringing on Lil Wayne, Richard Sherman (link), and Rachel Nichols (link).
Stephen A isn’t even good at his job but it feels like we know what’s going to happen here. He’s going to dominate the ratings over Skip. If people want to watch that nonsense debate shows, they’re going to choose ESPN’s product over Fox’s.
