Who are the top 5 quarterbacks in College Football? Trevor Lawrence has to be number one. Tua Tagovailoa has to be a close 2nd. Justin Herbert is right in that discussion next to Tua. Jake Fromm probably gets picked in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Jordan Love of Utah State is a sleeper. KJ Costello has had his moments at Stanford. Justin Fields might be in for a monster season after transferring to Ohio State. Here’s who I didn’t imagine making the cut in a billion years, Sam Ehlinger.
Joel Klatt recently released his top 5 quarterbacks for the upcoming college football season. Sam Ehlinger comes in at number 4.
This is bananas. Sam Ehlinger stinks. I truly cannot fathom that Ehlinger is even in this discussion. Texas might win a bunch of games. Hell, they might even win the Big 12. I can tell you that Sam Ehlinger still sucks. When you watch Sam Ehlinger play, the only possible way to describe him is poor man’s Tim Tebow. Somehow that guy is a top 5 collegiate quarterback?
I get that Tebow was great in college. Still, there’s not a chance in hell that any NFL team is taking Sam Ehlinger seriously as a draftable prospect. Sam Ehlinger is a 230
Let’s just look back one year ago. Ehlinger is in a full blown quarterback controversy with Shane Buechele. He’s coming off a year where he just completed 57 percent and threw 11 touchdowns and 8 interceptions. Okay, great, Ehlinger had a nice 2018 season. He did some nice things. 64.7 percent with a 25-5 TD to INT ratio is a nice improvement. That’s fine. We’re still talking about a guy that is a glorified fullback playing running back.
Ehlinger is an average passer with mediocre tools. He doesn’t have a rocket arm. He isn’t the most accurate guy in the world. Most of all, he’s being helped by a friendly Tom Herman offense. You know what Ehlinger looks like? He looks like Greg Ward at the University of Houston with Herman. Ward threw for over 3,000 yards too under Herman. Now Ward is struggling to make it in the NFL as a wide receiver and was recently released from the Eagles.
Let’s also relax about the numbers being put up. By comparison, Taylor Cornelius who rode the bench for years at Oklahoma State and didn’t even sign with an NFL team after this season just threw 32 touchdowns in the Big 12. This is a pillow fight conference when it comes to defense. Ehlinger’s numbers never wow you and that’s with a great head coach and horrendous opposing defenses.
Ehlinger might put up better numbers this year. Texas might even win the Big 12. Here’s one thing I do know. Sam Ehlinger stinks. This is not an NFL caliber quarterback. Let’s stop acting like he is an elite quarterback.
