The small schools get some love here at Vendetta as well, as next up on the docket for 2024 NFL Draft profiles is Southeast Missouri State’s Ryan Flournoy (say that five times fast). We had a chance to view him at the Senior Bowl, and after a less-than-stellar NFL Combine, what does his draft profile look like? Let’s talk about it.
Flournoy doesn’t have a lot to work off of, only two years of playing experience at Southeast Missouri State, but he did put up alright numbers while there. In his two years, he had 118 catches for 1,823 yards and 13 touchdowns. Any receiver who averages roughly 15 yards per catch is someone to dive a little deeper in to and see what they are all about.
Well, while I don’t love a ton of his game, there were some flashes of nice potential sprinkled in there. Worth noting before we begin, he was a popular name while I was down in Mobile as someone to watch out for.
Ryan Flournoy has the frame you look for (6’1, 200 lbs) and really solid speed as well (4.44 40-yard dash at the combine) to help transition to the NFL. Flournoy seems to play better against zone coverage, knowing where the empty pockets are, and does a good job establishing himself there. Knee bend is where you want it to make the proper routes, more on that shortly. The hands are what keep bringing me back, though. It feels like whenever you throw a ball his way, you can expect him to make a snag. Very few drops on the tape.
The route running confuses me. He has some of the basic tools you can work with, but not a ton of refinement. I see great hands, but the route leading up to it is just too sloppy at times. The footwork cutting in and out of breaks feels slow to me. Wish he was a bit stronger as well, as if his corner is pressing him off the line it takes some time to break away and begin his route. Today’s NFL is all about routes, and if you struggle with them, you’ll have a hard time getting a roster spot.
Do the pros outweigh the bad? For me, not right now they don’t. However, that doesn’t mean I think he isn’t worth a shot. Ryan Flournoy gets an undrafted grade from me, but I would have him on my list of guys I want as an undrafted free agent. Will he ever turn into a dude? Unlikely, but the raw, basics are there for you to work with.
