Ryan Ellis Likely Out For 2022-23 NHL Season
When the Ryan Ellis trade happened, did anybody expect that every team would somehow find a way to lose the trade? Somehow the Flyers got the worst end of the deal. Nolan Patrick, who is also out for the season, doesn’t cost anything in terms of salary. Ryan Ellis sure does and the good people of Philadelphia that cheer for the Flyers got some pretty awful news right before the season.
“No timetable for his return to play,” Fletcher said Thursday, according to Philly Hockey Now’s Sam Carchidi. “I’ll just say, my assumption is he won’t play this season. If he does, it’ll be a bonus.”
Dear, lord. I guess this isn’t super surprising given the fact that Ellis barely played a year ago. Ellis, 31, played in four games notching five points in those contests. When asked if Ellis might be done forever, Fletcher added “Certainly that’s a possibility,”. For all intents and purposes, Ellis should probably be treated like Carey Price at this point. Done until told otherwise.
The thing I don’t quite get is the Flyers should have made this call when the offseason opened up. If they did, they could have used Ellis’ $6.25 million on LTIR. If you just add him to LTIR and never sign the Rasmus Ristolainen extension, then Philly would have had enough money to land Johnn Gaudreau. Instead, now they don’t have Ellis and now Sean Couturier is also now likely out for the season. All that money on LTIR would have landed Gaudreau no problem (which was his preference). Furthermore, why make the Ellis deal a year ago if you knew Gaudreau was sitting there for you at this time?
Makes. No. Sense. But we here at Vendetta already know Chuck Fletcher just isn’t the guy to turn around the Flyers.
This is bad news for Flyers fans all around. I don’t know how young Andrew is going to do those game recaps this year but I feel for him. I really do. He deserves better than this.
Ellis is signed through the 2026-27 season and carries a $6.25MM cap hit. That puppy may just live on LTIR for the rest of the duration of that deal.
