Another wide receiver has gone down before the start of the 2023-24 NFL Season. Tim Patrick was the first to suffer a non-contact injury knocking him out for the season. Russell Gage is expected to join him on the list. The Bucs’ wide receiver is expected to miss the upcoming season.
Ian Rapoport at NFL Network was the first to report the news:
We’re still waiting on the official medical result. The blog will be updated accordingly.
Gage, 27, notched 51 receptions for 426 yards with five touchdowns across 13 games a season ago. It’s not exactly ideal to lose that kind of production. Keep in mind, the Bucs obviously don’t have Tom Brady anymore either. Taking away Gage from Baker Mayfield and or Kyle Trask is a big deal. The former LSU product was third on the depth chart behind Mike Evans and Chris Godwin.
Taye Barber, David Moore, Deven Thompkins, Kaylon Geiger, Rakim Jarrett, Cephus Johnson, Ryan Miller, Trey Palmer, and Kade Warner are the other wide receiver options on the Bucs roster. Rakim Jarrett and Trey Palmer are probably the two most intriguing options to replace him. Both are rookie wide receivers that I was high on for different reasons heading into the 2023 NFL Draft. Maybe this is an opportunity for one or both of them to flourish.
