Rumor: Zach Wilson ‘In The Mix’ To Be QB1 For Denver Broncos
The Denver Broncos are a mess right now. There are so many issues with how the roster is constructed that it’s almost impossible to have high hopes for this team in 2024. After cutting bait with quarterback Russell Wilson this off-season, the team searched for their new QB1 of the future.
The Broncos would reach on Bo Nix with the No. 12 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, but not before trading for former No. 3 overall pick Zach Wilson. Many believed that Nix would be the starter once the season officially began, but apparently, it’s not a guarantee.
Jeremy Fowler of ESPN is reporting that “They’re trying to regain his confidence again. I’m told he’s in a positive state of mind,” (Full quote via BleacherReport.com) and that he is definitely in the mix to be the QB1 in Denver. This is incredibly telling of how things are going for the Broncos.
Wilson did not look the part of a No. 3 pick while he was with the Jets, and he is potentially beating out another first-round pick in Bo Nix. If Wilson is named the starter in Denver, it all but confirms that Nix at 12 was the wrong pick and that it was a waste.
This has disaster written all over it. I don’t believe the Broncos are going to be any good this year, and it’s news rumors like this that have me bearish on the team.
Let’s say Zach Wilson wins the job, goes out and Denver finishes the year in the hunt for the playoffs–Nix is never seeing the field. He’s going to sit until the team trades him for a sixth-round pick and it’ll go down as a historically bad pick. Wilson will get an extension and become the full-time starter. Or, what I believe is the more likely thing to happen, is Nix starts the year, and the team will finish 6-11 as they sell off players at the deadline and enter a full-blown rebuild with a 25-year-old, second-year QB. Definitely a recipe for success.
