Broncos Part Ways with Russell Wilson

Pretty major news today as the Broncos have announced they will be moving on from QB Russell Wilson before the start of next season. This leaves them once again with a hole at quarterback just a couple of years after sending a historic haul to bring him in. Ian Rapoport was the first to break the news.

Denver avoids paying the additional $37M in guaranteed money. But will still take a $85M hit in dead cap. Just in case it wasn’t bad enough.

While this may be a little surprising given how much its going to hurt Denever financially. The writing seemed to be on the wall after Wilson was benched to end last season. Now, the Broncos seem more confident heading into next season without him.

It was just clear from the start that Wilson and Sean Payton did not get along. There was clearly a lot of turmoil there and it showed on the field.

Wilson went from one of the top QB’s in the NFL in Seattle to barely servicable during his first year in Denver. It didn’t seem real given how quickly it all happened. His 2023 season was better, but still left a lot to be desired, especially with that price tag.

The trade to bring in Wilson was already regarded as one of the worst of all time across all sports. But it somehow has become even worse. Not only has Seattle hit on a fair amount of the picks they received, but after just two years your moving on from the centerpiece of the entire deal.

It was highway robbery and will bite the Broncos in the but for many many years to come. They have no quarterback and very little draft capital. Add the cap hit from this contract, you now have very little cap space as well.

Really it’s looking like it’ll be dark dark times for Denver for the foreseeable future. Hey at least you got your one ring out of it right?

As for where Russell Wilson ends up. I’m not quite sure yet. A few teams come to mind, like the Falcons or even the Patriots. But somebody will pick him up before the start of next season. At least I think he will.
