Roman Wilson was a clutch player for Michigan during their run to a National Championship. Will Wilson peek there or can he also make an impact at the NFL level? That’s what we’re here to talk about so I’ll just get on with it. Here is your Roman Wilson 2024 NFL Draft Profile.
I’ll be the first to admit; I wasn’t overly high on Wilson during the year. I’m even on record for saying he’s just another Ronnie Bell. At first glance while watching Michigan, Wilson is a slippery small receiver but nothing that’s going to take your breath away. Wilson’s stock during the predraft process has climbed and his movement skills are better than I initially gave him credit for. Also, what should be kept in mind is that Michigan is a super run heavy offense. Blake Corum was the center of their universe on most Saturdays.
Wilson, the Hawaii native, played at a powerhouse program St. Louis. The same place that Tua Tagovailoa and Marcus Mariota played. Checked in at 5-foot-11, 185 during the Combine. Had a positive showing during the Combine. Ripped out a 4.39 during the 40. Even benched 12 reps, which is a solid number for his frame. Didn’t do any of the leaping events. Stock went way up after a positive showing at the Senior Bowl. No question he was one of the better receivers at the event. One of the only guys that gave Quinyon Mitchell problems, which has to be factored in.
My concern here is that he tops out as another Mecole Hardman. A nice weapon with speed but nothing special. I don’t see that wow juice that Marvin Mims had a year ago. Wilson is fast but he’s not grease lightning in the knees. A lot of one speed to his art. Good speed but not anything that’s going to knock you out short area.
Hard worker. Made the most of his opportunities. Had 48 receptions for 789 yards and 12 touchdowns last year. Was in the 375-420 range as a sophomore and junior. He’s a guy that functions best once you get him the ball in space. Was used as a runner on a handful of occasions. Frequently targetted during trick play situations. Timing and rhythm patterns, he can win and get open. What kind of numbers would he have had in a different offense? It’s fair to question.
I’m at the point where I like Roman Wilson, but I don’t love, love him. 4th or 5th round if I need some speed at the WR spot, I’m interested in taking a look. Think he can do things but I’d be surprised if he turns into a serious game changer.
