Report: Hawks could consider trading Trae Young in offseason

The Atlanta Hawks are on fire, but not in a good way. More so a dumpster fire. With high expectations heading into the 2022-23 season, the Hawks needed to make some noise. But now, in the play-in, an early exit could lead the Hawks to trade their superstar point guard Trae Young, according to The Ringer‘s Kevin O’Connor.

“With the offseason approaching, league sources say the Hawks’ front office has the green light from ownership to do whatever it wants to with the roster, which includes considering trade opportunities involving All-Star point guard Trae Young,” O’Connor wrote.

Only after being removed from the Eastern Conference Finals two years ago, the Atlanta Hawks’ roster has only gotten better. But why aren’t they actually getting better?

This offseason, Atlanta acquired Dejounte Murray from the San Antonio Spurs, which moved them up the Eastern Conference rankings. Now, with this deal being in the past and the Hawks in the play-in, it’s safe to say it did not work out for them.

Young has been the cornerstone for the Hawks since they traded for him on draft night. In his career, Young has averaged 25.5 points, three rebounds and 9.3 assists per game on 43.7 percent shooting. Young has also been selected to two All-Star game appearances in 2019-20 and 2021-22.

Although Young may be viewed as the franchise player for the Hawks, recent changes to the Atlanta front office might question that. Quin Snyder, the new Hawks’ head coach, demands a voice in roster changes, according to O’Connor’s sources. Atlanta also hired Landry Fields, previously their assistant general manager, as their general manager in June 2022 in place of Travis Schlenk.

With Snyder becoming the Hawks bench boss, he has been working to install a motion offense into Atlanta’s system. A system exactly not entirely suitable for Young’s play style, which could lead to Snyder questioning Young’s role on the team, especially with Dejounte Murray in uniform. With rumors flying all around Trae Young, there could be another blockbuster trade involving the former Oklahoma point guard this summer.
