Hawks Acquire Dejounte Murray For Gallinari & Bounty Of Picks
The Spurs are officially in full rebuild mode. I didn’t think I would actually ever see the day Gregg Popovich waved the white flag. It happened. The Hawks have sent the farm for Spurs point guard Dejounte Murray.
Murray will head to Atlanta. Danilo Gallinari and three first round picks including an additional swap will head to San Antonio. It’s quite the haul for Murray. San Antonio wanted their Jrue Holiday package and got it.
Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN was the first to report the news:
Atlanta will send a 2023 first round via Charlotte as part of this package. They will send their own picks in 2025 and 2027. San Antonio will also get a swap that will come in 2026 via Atlanta.
The only part we’re unsure of is the Danilo Gallinari situation. On the surface, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him bought out by the Spurs. Gallinari only had a $5 million guarantee on his $21.45 million salary for 2022-23. If Gallinari is not waived by today, his salary is fully guaranteed. We’ll see what happens on that front.
Murray, 25, is obviously a very good player. Some would say underrated. The former first round pick out of Washington is coming off his first All-Star appearance and led the league in steals. If we know anything about the Trae Young Hawks, it’s that they have thus far been a tire fire defensively. The hope is that Murray can help solve that issue.
The Spurs side of this is easy. Victor Wembanyama. Nothing else needs to be said. San Antonio is officially in the mix for those sweepstakes.
