Reese McGuire Has Earned His Spot On The 2023 Red Sox

Christian Vazquez isn’t coming back and I’m not positive it’s a bad thing anymore. I love Vazquez but can we really argue with what Chaim Bloom did here (despite the fact that I still am questionable on the return package). Connor Wong deserves a shot to start next year. The same can be said for Reese McGuire and I’m not sure it’s arguable.

Reese McGuire has earned his spot on the 2023 Red Sox. The man that was previously seen as a throw in for the Jake Diekman trade just might be a serious diamond in the rough. Mcguire has done nothing except thrive with Boston in his short stint with the club in 2022. Bloom deserves credit for this one.

I’m not sure what McGuire is doing is sustainable but this guy has done nothing except rake since coming to Boston. A batting line of .353/.398/.529 is just stupid good for someone who is supposed to be a back up catcher. He’s even pimped three home runs including two short porch bombs at Yankee Stadium.

Most importantly, McGuire has made contact. He puts the ball in play and gives your offense a chance. No, the power numbers may not be there next year but it’s a hell of a lot better than just waving the white flag at the position, which is something a lot of teams do on the offensive side of catching.

Mcguire has also been damn good defensively. He’s thrown out, 5-of-11 base stealers. Damn good clip. He’s handled games well and he fits this new Red Sox window. McGuire is under team control for cheap for the next three seasons covering his age 28-30 seasons. Pretty good business if you ask me.

It’s hard to know how the Red Sox will lineup next year. What’s clear is that they have their catching room figured out. It’s going to be Wong and McGuire. It’s hard to argue with it either.
