WWE Monday Night Raw (9/26/22): Results and Review

Opening Segment — Bianca Belair and Damage CTRL Promo

This episode of WWE Monday Night RAW was kicked off by the RAW women’s champion, Bianca Belair, making her way to the ring with Asuka and Alexa Bliss by her side. She began her promo by saying she has learned her lesson and decided not to roll alone moving forward. Then we heard the Damage CTRL music hit and they made their way to the ring.

Bayley began to express how she, Dakota Kai, and IYO SKY had to work for everything they have. She says Belair was hand chosen and handed everything she has. Belair took that as a chance to make sure Bayley remembers who has been the top woman in the company while she was away with an injury. Belair even made sure to make reference to their last match where Bayley was slammed on a ladder, courtesy of the current women’s champion. Bayley then used that as an opportunity to challenge the champion to a ladder match at WWE Extreme Rules. Belair accepted Bayley’s challenge and followed it by challenging IYO SKY to a match that will take place immediately.

Bianca Belair vs. IYO Sky

We returned from commercial break to our first match of this week’s WWE Monday Night RAW, which saw Belair take control for most of the match early, before IYO started to make a comeback. After Belair nearly regained her momentum, she was thrust to the bottom rope with her head hanging outside of the ring. SKY then delivered a stiff boot to the head which led into another commercial break.

After commercial, both women were down in the ring. Belair regained control pretty quickly, but IYO was giving constant trouble the whole time. Belair climbed to the top rope, but IYO SKY met her with an incredible arm drag that launched Belair from the top rope. She attempted to take advantage even more by hitting a moonsault but was knocked outside the ring by Belair. The RAW women’s champion then launched herself onto the reaming members of damage ctrl before throwing IYO back in the ring. Belair hit the KOD and picked up a clean victory over one half of the WWE women’s tag-team champions.

Backstage interview with Rey Mysterio

In this segment, we had Rey Mysterio once again say that he would never hurt his son. Although, he does mention that he is starting to question where the man he thought was his son even went. Rey then directs his attention toward his match with Seth Rollins and says he will show no mercy on him tonight.

The Miz security promo

With all the recent Dexter Lumis incidents, Miz has decided to enlist a security team. He named the team “Miz Force,” which was hysterical. This was a fun segment that played out throughout the rest of the night by showing members of “Miz Force” unconscious throughout the arena.

Seth Rollins promo

The words “burn it down” were blared throughout the arena as Seth Rollins made his way out to the ring. The Edmonton crowd was especially hot Monday night. It sounded like the entire stadium was singing Rollins’ song.

Rollins is truly a top tier talent. This was another incredible promo from the Monday Night Messiah. He blamed Matt Riddle for his loss to Bobby Lashley last week on RAW before directing his attention to the upcoming fight pit match between himself and Riddle at WWE Extreme Rules. He says he will conquer this match just like he has every other type of match he has been in. It is at this time that Rey Mysterio’s music hit.

Seth Rollins vs. Rey Mysterio

Rey immediately delivered a drop kick to Rollins upon entering the ring. He has been doing a decent job, at least in ring, on selling his frustration with the Dominik situation. We returned back from commercial break to Rollins controlling most of the early match. Rey began to make a push before being hit with a brutal gut buster and thrown from the ring. At this time, Dominik Mysterio began walking down the ramp with a chair in hand. It looked as if he might hit his father with it, but he passed him by and set his chair up ringside as we headed to another commercial.

After the break, Rollins was back in control as Dominik watched from ringside. Seth began to hit the “three amigos,” but Mysterio managed to reverse the third attempt. This was a pretty back-and-forth match, despite it never really feeling like Rey had control. He managed to a hit a splash for a close near fall before Dominik got his attention. Dominik threw the chair toward his father and begs him to hit him with it. Rey refuses again, but Rhea Ripley attacked him while Rollins was distracting the referee. Rey Mysterio was tossed back in the ring, allowing for Seth Rollins to choke him out and pick up the victory via submission.

Johnny Gargano and Kevin Owens vs. Alpha Academy

This tag-team match started with Johnny Gargano and Chad Gable in the ring. They exchanged some technical wrestling maneuvers before each tagging in their respective partners. Kevin Owens had a really clean transition from a back senton into a moonsault from the second rope onto Otis. Despite that, Otis was able to have his team in control heading to break.

After the break, Alpha Academy had Gargano down in the ring but he managed to make the hot tag to Owens. Owens began a series of impressive moves on Gable including a wicked lariat followed by a fisherman brain buster. The match continued to go back and forth a bit. Eventually, Kevin Owens managed to deliver an elbow to Otis through the announce table, leaving Johnny Wrestling alone with Chad Gable in the ring. Theory interrupted out of nowhere almost costing Gargano the match, but he was able to kick out of the cliffhanger DDT. Gargano left the ring and delivered a beautiful super kick on Theory before hitting One Final Beat on Gable for the victory.

AJ Styles backstage interview

In this brief segment AJ Styles addressed declining his offer to join the Judgement Day before Finn Balor interrupted. Finn called AJ a friend and offered him some extra protection Monday night during his match against Sami Zayn, but Styles once again declined.

Austin Theory and Alpha Academy backstage segment

Austin Theory was expressing his disappointment with the Alpha Academy following their defeat to Gargano and Owens earlier in the night when he got a phone call. He said it was for Chad Gable and put the phone on speaker. We then heard the voice of Braun Strowman, who challenged Gable to a match for next week’s WWE Monday Night RAW.

Omos vs. Local Jobbers

This match once again saw Omos squash two local wrestlers in a very short match. They are obviously building to a match between him and Braun Strowman sometime in the future, possibly at WWE Crown Jewel. Either way, this was another forgettable match for Omos.

The Miz encounters Dexter Lumis again

The Miz was walking around backstage and found his “Miz Force” passed out on the ground. He began to look around for Dexter Lumis as the mannequin behind him takes off a hockey mask to reveal it is not a mannequin after all. Lumis struck Miz repeatedly with a hockey stick before choking him out once again.

Nikki ASH vs. Candice LeRae

In the biggest news of the night, Nikki ASH was standing in the ring awaiting her opponent as the music of The Poison Pixie began playing through the stadium. The stadium popped immediately. Candice LeRae made her return to WWE on the RAW brand not long after her husband, Johnny Gargano, made his return.

This was a huge swerve by WWE creative. It is amazing that they were able to keep the news of both their signings away from the public. This was a relatively quick match that saw Nikki growing incredibly frustrated. It didn’t take long for LeRae to hit a swinging neck breaker from the second rope to pick up the victory.

After the match, Nikki was sitting in the ring, took her mask off, and seemed very upset. The announcers made sure to address this. She could be in for a much needed rebrand soon.

Sami Zayn vs. AJ Styles

The wrestling nerd in me was drooling over this match. It is still amazing to see AJ Styles in a WWE ring. I will never get tired of it. Sami Zayn came to Monday Night RAW to face Styles after they had a bit of an argument on Twitter.

The Honorary Uce made sure to bring Bloodline member, Solo Sikoa, with him for back up. Zayn might be the most over wrestler on the roster currently. The Bloodline storyline involving him could never end and nobody would be mad.

Zayn looked incredibly motivated in this match. He was moving quicker and with more confidence than he has in recent weeks. He managed to hit a blue thunder bomb early for a near fall. I swear that is one of the coolest moves in wrestling. Zayn then hit some sort of orange crush variant, but Styles managed to kick out again. Zayn looked simply amazing in this match. Styles was eventually able to regain momentum by hitting one of the best pele kicks I have seen in a long time. He had an incredibly clean transition into a calf crusher at one point that looked flawless. After reaching the ropes, Zayn was able to distract the referee which allowed Sikoa to interfere and slam Styles onto the ring apron. Zayn followed that up by hitting a Helluva Kick for the win and embracing Solo after the victory.

After the match, the Judgement Day surrounded the ring and Finn once again offered Style a spot in the Judgement Day. Styles answered his question with a middle finger. The Judgement Day immediately started to unload blows into Styles as Rhea Ripley got a chair. They angled Styles head inside the chair and Finn Balor acted as if he was going to stomp on it, most likely resulting a career ending injury for Styles. He stops before actually doing it and lets Styles know that he could have ended his career right there.

Damian Priest vs. Matt Riddle

This was the main event in this week’s WWE Monday Night Raw. It started with a beautiful exchange of strikes by two of the best in the business before Matt Riddle was able to gain the upper hand. Riddle has looked much more aggressive as of late and it is doing him well. Riddle managed to take out the other Judgement Day members before launching himself into a right hand from Damian Priest. Priest then lifted him up in a suplex position before dropping him on the barricade. It looked painful as hell.

After commercial, both men were back in the ring and Priest was in control of the match. Riddle managed to gain some momentum and hit Bro Derek for a close near fall. Rhea Ripley then managed to distract Riddle long enough for Priest to a deliver a powerful lariat before planting Riddle face first. Riddle was able to to kick out and roll up Priest into a small cradle for the victory.

The Judgement Day immediately attacked Riddle after the bell. It was at this time, that the music of Edge began playing. He sprinted to the ring and was able to deliver a spear to Priest and Balor individually. He stared down Dominik Mysterio, but Rhea Ripley was able to pull him from harm’s way. As the Judgement Day were regrouping and leaving up the ramp, Edge delivered a solid promo and challenged Balor to an I Quit match at WWE Extreme Rules in Philadelphia.
