The Red Sox Are Trying To Land Dylan Cease?

The Red Sox made a big splash signing Alex Bregman and they might not be done adding prior to the 2025 MLB Season. Apparently, Boston has their sights set on Dylan Cease to further beef up the rotation.

Cease, 29, posted an 14-11 record, 3.47 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, and 224 strikeouts in 189.1 innings a season ago. He’s also a free agent after the 2025 MLB Season, which is why he’s available for the right price. The same can be said about Michael King. Keep in mind, upcoming free agency is exactly why San Diego parted with Juan Soto last year.

Reports indicate that the Sox are monitoring Cease and could make a move for the right-handed starter if the price is right.

According to Sean McAdam of MassLive.com, “An industry source confirmed the Red Sox have been in touch with the San Diego Padres about starting pitcher Dylan Cease, who is being shopped around this spring. That same source cautioned that, to date at least, the interest from the Red Sox has been closer to ‘due diligence’ level than it is to aggressive pursuit. But for a pitcher the quality of Cease, the Red Sox at least want to monitor the market.”

Manager Alex Cora also confirmed the Sox aren’t done adding.

“We talked about winning the last few years, a thing that we haven’t done,” he told reporters. “I think the front office talked—we talked as an organization at the end of the season last year, and [concluded] we need to be more aggressive in the offseason and execute. So far, we’ve done a good job. We haven’t stopped, though. We aren’t done yet, we’re still trying to improve the roster which is the most important thing. I think the guys in the clubhouse, they understand that.”

It’s obviously not a lock but maybe there is a deal to be had here. Would the Padres consider a package that includes Lucas Giolito and a few throw in prospects? The Padres don’t want to totally tank the season but maybe something that keeps them relevant while restocking the prospect base gets a deal done. Something to keep in mind.
