Kyle Schwarber will be a UFA after the 2025 MLB Season. The Phillies have certainly got their money’s worth after signing him prior to the 2022 Season. Only Aaron Judge (157) and Shohei Ohtani (132) have homered more than Schwarber has (131) over the last three years.
Philadelphia would be wise to get Schwarber under contract heading into 2026. The power hitting slugger made it clear he would prefer to remain in Philadelphia.
“We’ll see,” he said. “I know there’s interest on our side. We’ll see what happens throughout this camp, if they approach us and we get deeper and deeper into discussion. … The best line I’ve ever heard on that is from Jon Lester — the best way to get paid is to win — so I’ll just focus on that. It’s what I’ve always focused on.”
This is where things start to become interesting for the Phillies. They’re already over the luxury tax and have been pretty much since Dave Dombrowski got there. The luxury tax has to start becoming a concern there. NBC Sports Philadelphia had a pretty good write-up on that if you want to take a look. Getting Schwarber’s $20 million AAV off the books would be a way to save money. Nick Castellanos is also under contract for 2026, who could theoretically slide in as the DH next year.
Schwarber, 31, is a big reason why the Phillies are the team that they are. It’s hard to find a guy who can hit homers like that. It would be wise to keep Schwarber in-house but at what cost?
