The Red Sox finally put their money where their mouth is. They needed a right-handed bat in the worst possible way and they finally went out and got one. Alex Bregman is officially on his way to Boston.
Chandler Rome of the trashbag site that is The Athletic was the first to report the news:
The now former Astros infielder will sign a three year deal worth a whopping $120 million. Good enough for a $40 million per year deal. It’s not that different from the deal that Pete Alonso just signed with the Mets. Very short term for big bucks.
It sure looks like a win for both sides. The Red Sox get their guy without having to shell out a long term commitment. Bregman gets major dollars with chances to opt back out if he wants to. There is apparently deferred money in the contract but those details haven’t come out yet.
It’s a huge win for the Sox. Craig Breslow finally grew a pair and made something happen. More importantly, Bregman provides tremendous value at second base. Rafael Devers will stick at third base. Trevor Story is the shortstop. It gives the young guns Marcelo Mayer and Kristian Campbell time to prove their ready. They don’t need to be forced into the lineup prematurely now.
More than that, it gives the Sox credibility again. Bregman is a champion with real leadership skills. An important guy in the room that they needed.
Bregman, 30, slashed .260/.315/.453 last season with 26 homers in 145 games. It was good enough for a 4.1 WAR season.
