Padres Ink Nick Pivetta To 4-Year Contract

The Padres are beefing up their rotation right as Spring Training is starting to get rolling. San Diego has signed Nick Pivetta to a four-year contract who was one of the few guys remaining on the free agent market.

Jeff Passan was the first to report the news:

The deal is for $55 million over the four years but the contract is backloaded. The Canadian starter can also opt out after the second and third years of the deal. On the whole, it calculates as $13.75 million on the luxury tax, which is a reasonable rate for any veteran starter. All things considered, probably a dumb dumb move to decline the $21 million qualifying offer from the Red Sox at the beginning of the offseason.

Pivetta, 32 on the 14th of this month, posted a 4.14 ERA in 145⅔ innings last year. While not super sexy, it was also the lowest walk rate of his career at 6.1%. Pivetta has really nasty stuff. He’s just always run extremely hot and cold during his career. A 28.9% K rate last year isn’t nothing. He can fool hitters plus his 6-foot-5 frame plays out when he’s on one of those runs.

In terms of the Red Sox part of this, they did use the QO on Pivetta at the start of the offseason so they will get a draft pick for losing him. They will also give up one for signing Alex Bregman. The timing on that most likely isn’t coincidental.
