The Red Sox missed out on Juan Soto. Now they are in pivot mode. Who will Boston spend their leftover money on? It sure looks like Alex Cora is pushing to bring Alex Bregman to Fenway Park.
The Sox manager spoke extremely highly of Bregman (who Cora used to be the bench coach for in Houston, once upon a time) during the Winter Meetings.
“Alex is a good player, man,” Cora told reporters Monday at the Winter Meetings. “He’s a complete player. It’s a player, he’s been on winning teams his whole career. Good defender. Offensively, he’s really good. He’s a guy that a lot of people are talking about. I do believe he can impact a big-league team, a championship-caliber team. He’s that type of player.”
Houston is obviously expected to try to retain the player so there will be competition in the bidding. Bregman is also heading into his age 31 season so how high do you really want to go in this bidding war? It’s also worth noting that the Sox have a number of infield prospects waiting in the wings like Kristian Campbell and Marcelo Mayer. This infield gets crowded quickly if you’re adding Bregman to the mix.
Just in case you were wondering, Cora shut down any idea of Devers being moved off third base. If the Red Sox do sign Bregman, it seems like it would be to play second. Trevor Story I guess would remain at shortstop.
