Rays Ink Danny Jansen To One-Year Deal

The Rays are on the board. Tampa Bay knows how to bargain bin shop and has landed their first free agent of the 2024 free agency period. Danny Jansen is on his way to Florida after signing a one year deal with the Rays.

Jansen, 29, has a mutual option for 2026 worth $12 million. The catcher picks up a $500k buyout if it’s declined. If that’s going to be the case, Jansen will need to rebound on his numbers a year ago (.206/.308/.348 in 328 plate appearances). Either way, the good news is Jansen will play in tax free Florida so he will keep his earnings.

The most notable thing Jansen did last year was play for two different teams in the same game. A wild story if you’re unfamiliar with it.

This was certainly an area of need for Tampa. The other options on the roster include Alex Jackson and Ben Rortvedt. Jansen likely steps in and takes the starting job right away with his new club.

This is now the third different AL East team Jansen will suit up for. The Red Sox gave up multiple prospects for him at the deadline during a season they didn’t make the playoffs. Still makes zero sense but that’s a story for another day.
