Clay Holmes has a new home (pun intended? sorry if that was corny. I write so many posts that you start to not really care what goes at the intro). After spending the last 3.5 years with the Yankees, Holmes won’t have to move far. He’s signing with the Queens instead on a nice little payday.
Joel Sherman over at the New York post was the first to the news and has been all over this. He was the first to suggest teams wanting Holmes as a starting pitcher. He’s since confirmed that the deal with the Mets is a three year deal worth a total of $38 million.
Holmes, 31, will be deployed as a starting pitcher in his new home. The rotation for the Mets is starting to fill out. Luis Severino and Sean Manaea were both hit with qualifying offers but declined them. Frankie Montas was already signed to fill up one of those spots. It appears Holmes will get the other spot left behind.
The 6-foot-5 righty notched a 3.14 ERA across 67 innings a season ago. That’s to go along with a 9.7 K per 9 rate. Holmes hasn’t been used as a starter since he was in the minors with the Pirates. If all else fails, he can go back to a reliever role. However, right now it’s a total mystery if Holmes can actually succeed in this new role. The positive is that Holmes produced a ground ball at a 65% rate last year. We’ll see if that holds up as a starter.
This transition to a starter is fascinating. I guess it makes some sense given that Edwin Diaz is already locked in as the starter. If all else fails, he likely goes to a set up role behind Diaz.
