The Las Vegas Raiders battled adversity like no other last season and made the playoffs. They added Chandler Jones and Davante Adams, and this team looked like a real contender. The only thing holding this team back is head coach Josh McDaniels, who just isn’t a good fit.
It’s not just the fact that McDaniels isn’t a good fit for the Raiders. He simply isn’t built to be a head coach in the NFL, and it’s evident over his coaching career.
Before we look at the historic loss the Raiders took to the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, let’s go back to see why the Raiders hiring McDaniels was a mistake.
Long known as a Patriot coach, McDaniels started with the team in 2001, and 5 years later, became the offensive coordinator. The next year, the ‘SpyGate’ Scandal occurred. With McDaniels right in the middle of it, he couldn’t get enough of cheating and kept it with him.
Then in 2009, McDaniels was the new head coach for the Denver Broncos. The cheating ways in New England carried over into Denver by McDaniels. The Broncos were doing the exact same thing, videotaping teams’ practices illegally. This time the San Francisco 49ers were victims. McDaniels received a $50,000 fine, and his time in Denver got cut incredibly short. After one and a half seasons, McDaniels was fired with an 11-17 record as a head coach.
Despite all this, McDaniels got a second chance as a head coach before the Raiders. In 2018, he agreed to be the new head coach for the Colts. However, he made the decision to withdraw from the agreement, staying with the Patriots for a second time after returning in 2012. He finally got his second chance, although he wasn’t deserving of it, and still blew it off.
Now, back to the Raiders and their horrific start to the season. They are currently 0-2 and suffered an embarrassing loss to the Cardinals in Week 2. After being up 20-0 heading into the second half, the Raiders offense could only come up with 3 points in the last two quarters. Conservative play-calling led to a late-quarter collapse, allowing the Cardinals to tie the game at 23 and send the game to OT.
The Raiders were unstoppable in overtime last season. This season has proven to be way different, and not for the better. The Cardinals got the ball first but failed to score. Now, all the Raiders needed was a field goal to win the game. Daniel Carlson is an ice man, just get into field goal range and let him win the game.
On 2nd and 10, the Raiders were two yards away from prime field goal position on the Cardinals 42. You’re probably thinking they would hand off the ball to Josh Jacobs to pick up a few yards and bring out one of the best kickers in the game.
No. McDaniels wants to be cute. A quick pass to Hunter Renfrow leads to a fumble by the Pro Bowl wide receiver, and the Cardinals recovered and returned it for a game-winning touchdown.
Why the hell are they passing when the game-winner is just a few yards away? Why did the play calling in the second half get so weak and conservative?
An interim head coach seemed to have more success with the Raiders than Josh McDaniels. Yes, it’s only Week 2, but this Raiders team is far too talented to be playing this bad. Hence, there’s no way that McDaniels can keep his job if this season is a flop.
