Illinois MBB’s Kofi Cockburn Suspended for Selling Team Apparel

Preseason All-American and Illinois star Kofi Cockburn has been suspended three games for selling team-issued apparel and memorabilia in June, per release. Cockburn will miss the Illini’s opening three games against Jackson State, Arkansas State and Marquette.

The 7-foot center sold some of his Illini gear on The Players Trunk over the summer. Unfortunately, the NCAA’s leap into the era of name, image and likeness happened a month later in July, which no longer held student athletes from profiting off of their image.

Illinois coach Brad Underwood said that he was “disappointed” in the suspension in a statement on Monday.

“We are disappointed with the three-game suspension, because there were unprecedented factors and altered timelines related to his decision to ultimately withdraw from the NBA Draft and return to school.”

“Once Kofi had a full understanding of where he stood regarding the draft, he made an educated decision to return to school, work toward his degree, and continue improving his game. That said, we understand and respect the NCAA’s decision in this matter, and we will move forward accordingly.”

“As always, Kofi’s attitude and outlook remain upbeat and positive. He is focused on helping his teammates prepare for the season, and we can’t wait to have him rejoin us on the court.”

Cockburn averaged 17.7 points and 9.5 rebounds per game for the Illini last season. His loss hurts the Illinois frontcourt, but the No. 11 team in the country should still be favored in the three games the Kingston, Jamaica native will miss.
