The Detroit Pistons and New York Knicks have agreed to a trade that will greatly shake up both teams’ roster. The Pistons will send Bojan Bogdanovic and Alec Burks to the Knicks for Quentin Grimes, Malachi Flynn, Evan Fournier, Ryan Arcidiacono, and two second-round picks.
ESPN Insider Adrian Wojnarowski was among the first to break the news.
This deal will technically be completed in two parts. The Knicks were unable to aggregate Flynn’s salary in a trade because he was recently traded as a part of the OG Anunoby deal. That will not affect any moving pieces in the deal, however.
This deal will add scoring and three-point shooting for the Knicks. Bogdanovic and Burks are both capable of getting hot and filling up the bucket. That can be done as self-creators or playing off a creator. That is perfect in New York as it allows them to have a role with Jalen Brunson on and off the floor. Overall, the Knicks will have a lot of lineup flexibility.
Bogdanovic and Burks are both in the midst of productive scoring seasons. Bogdanovic is currently averaging 20.2 points while shooting 41.5% percent from three. Burks is averaging 12.2 points while hitting from deep at a 40.1% rate.
Bogdanovic and Burks are not great defenders, but the Knicks should be able to work around those issues. The team is a solid defensive unit that should be able to hide lesser defenders.
The addition of Bogdanovic will also provide the Knicks with a capable starter in games that Anunoby or Julius Randle miss.
This move is a win-now move for the Knicks. Bogdanovic and Burks are both on expiring deals. Still, that is a massive upgrade from Evan Fournier who sits on a club option for next year.
The real losses for New York are Grimes and the second-round picks. That is a fair price for two players that can help this season.
Grimes is a smart addition for Detroit. As a Piston, he should see a massive increase in minutes. Hopefully, that results in development.
Grimes is a good fit in Detroit. The Pistons are adding a quality defender who has a career 37.9 three-point percentage. Grimes should be able to play off of Cade Cunningham and Jaden Ivey. That should be considered a win for a team that has struggled to intelligently add pieces around its young core.
This move will put the Pistons far over the number of players allowed on an active roster. That means Detroit has more work on its plate. At a minimum, the Pistons will need to cut a few players. It would not be a shock for Detroit to make a few small trades before the deadline either.
