Pep Guardiola Expected To Leave Manchester City Next Summer

Just after losing a heartbreaking FA Cup final to bitter rivals Manchester United, Manchester City fans are going to have to brace for something more painful than a defeat to their crosstown foes. Pep Guardiola is expected to leave the club following next season.

The Catalan manager currently has only 12 months remaining on his contract, and City’s hierarchy is fearful that his ninth season at the club will be his last. Despite wanting him to sign a new contract, the club is giving Guardiola space to make a decision on his future. It is looking likely, however, that next year will be his final season on the Manchester City sideline.

Guardiola has found nothing but success since moving to the Premier League in 2016. Since then, he has led City to 15 major trophies, including its first-ever Champions League title last season and six Premier League titles. Four of these Premier League titles have come in the last four years, and in the eight years that Guardiola has been in England, his City side has failed to win the league just twice.

His Manchester City teams of late are arguably some of the greatest teams in the history of not just the Premier League but of soccer in general. Players such as Kevin De Bruyne, İlkay Gündoğan, Rodri, and 2023-24 Premier League Player of the Season Phil Foden have shone under Guardiola’s tutelage, and the team he has now looks practically unbeatable.

Guardiola’s future landing spot is currently a mystery, as is who City will target as his replacement. Girona manager Míchel will surely be looked at due to Girona’s recent success in La Liga and the fact that Girona is part of the City Football Group. Other managers, including Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso and currently unemployed Roberto De Zerbi, will be looked at as well.
