Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso has confirmed that he will remain as manager of Bayer Leverkusen next season. This comes after some of Europe’s biggest clubs, such as German rivals Bayern Munich and Liverpool, have pursued him to try and lure the Spanish manager away from Leverkusen.
Alonso’s Leverkusen side has been a revelation this year and currently sits atop the Bundesliga table, 10 points ahead of defending champions Bayern. It was widely anticipated that Alonso would move on following this season, but after taking the international break to consider his options, he has decided to stay in Leverkusen.
“It has been a season with a lot of speculation regarding my future. “I wanted to use the international break to reflect a little bit better and to take a decision,” Alonso said. “Last week, I had a good meeting with Simon [Rolfes, the club’s sporting director] with Fernando [Carro, CEO], when I informed them of my decision to continue being coach of Bayer Leverkusen.
“For sure all the decisions, you need to analyze well, and I tried to take the right ones, I tried to take the ones that come in a natural way, and at this moment I feel this is the right place for me to be to develop as a coach. I am a young coach, but I have to feel it, and right now I feel that this is the right place.”
It is being speculated that Alonso’s decision to reject Bayern and Liverpool was done with an eye on a future chance at the Real Madrid job. Alonso is a Madrid legend and with current manager Carlo Ancelotti‘s contract set to expire in 2026, Alonso would likely be the top candidate to succeed the Italian manager.
For now, however, Alonso will remain with Leverkusen and attempt to dethrone Bayern for the first time in over a decade.
