Manchester City won yet another Premier League title following Arsenal’s 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest Saturday evening, clinching their third title in a row and their fifth in the last six years.
Arsenal had been leading the title race for most of the season, occupying first place for 248 days. Consecutive draws to Liverpool, West Ham and Southampton opened the door for City, who took their opportunity and defeated Arsenal 4-1 in their second matchup of the season to reclaim pole position for the title.
“The Premier League is without doubt the most demanding and competitive league in the world so that tells you everything about what an achievement this is,” said captain Ilkay Gundogan about winning another title.
Manchester City can now enjoy their victory lap during their remaining Premier League fixtures. This began with a 1-0 victory against Chelsea on Sunday where players with limited minutes such as Kalvin Phillips, Stefan Ortego, Sergio Gomez and Cole Palmer got starts. City then finishes at Brighton on Wednesday and at Brentford on Sunday.
While another Premier League title would be considered enough of an accomplishment for just about any other team in the world, City still has much to play for. They are attempting to become the first English side to complete the treble since Manchester United did so in 1999.
“I have the feeling we’ve done something exceptional, but to be considered one of the greatest [teams] we have to win the Champions League, otherwise it’s not complete,” said manager Pep Guardiola.
The first step in completing the treble comes during the FA Cup Final on June 3 against Manchester United. Manchester City last won the FA Cup in 2019, demolishing Watford 6-0.
A week later, City face the tall task of winning their first Champions League trophy. While they have looked like the best team in the competition, Inter Milan will prove a challenging matchup. The Serie A giants have experience in winning the Champions League, winning the trophy under José Mourinho in 2010.
This is how City cemented itself as one of the best, if not the best, clubs in the world. Winning the treble proves how capable they are in multiple different competitions and proves that they have the squad depth to compete for no matter who they have on the field. It also proves that they can win the Champions League, the main criticism Pep Guardiola has received while at City.
To win five in six years in the supposed best league in the world is truly unfathomable. City is dominating English soccer and it is going to take something special to stop them from winning yet another Premier League title next season.
