Millionaire Draymond Green Says “Fines Don’t Make Sense”

Green, who makes $25,000,000 a year, doesn’t think the NBA sets its players up for life after retirement.

Anyone familiar with the NBA knows that for better or for worse, Draymond Green is a never ending story. We can always count on him for a hot take, or a cheap shot. In a recent appearance on Shaquille O’Neal‘s The BIG Podcast, Draymond once again delivered a take so bad that it’s hard to believe.

(Skip to 12:00 for the portion about fines)

In the clip, Draymond complains to Shaq that NBA players work very hard to “accumulate wealth”. There’s no doubt that this is true. Despite all his antics, Draymond has the accolades to back up his recent four-year/$100 million contract with the Golden State Warriors. However, in true Draymond Green fashion, he quickly turns from reasonable to delusional. Green thinks the NBA fine system “doesn’t make sense”, and is in fact exploitative. “When you get fined the way we get fined, it’s actually not set up for us to be wealthy after we’re done playing.” You would think if anyone understood NBA fines by now, it would be Draymond Green. Maybe Draymond’s perspective is skewed. Between suspensions and fines, he has forfeited over $4 million in salary…which is 4% of his current contract’s worth. I think he’ll be okay.

Draymond Green’s attitude in this clip shows the sharp contrast between him and people he may aspire to be. Between his podcast and appearances on Inside the NBA, it’s clear that Green envisions a post-NBA career in commentary. Maybe he should take a page from Charles Barkley‘s book. Earlier this week, Barkley made sure to focus on working class people being affected by the end of TNT’s run with the NBA. It’s clear that Barkley and Shaq have done fine after their NBA careers. Not unlike Draymond, both players had a reputation for being aggressive, blunt, and even confrontational. They’re been able to figure it out. Hopefully Draymond will, too.
