I mentioned this on the podcast, people forget about the fact that the Chiefs allowed Patrick Mahomes to sit for an entire season. That is so valuable towards his development. Alex Smith held the fort for a year and allowed Mahomes to become Mahomes. Smith and the Chiefs organization deserve so much credit for that.

Patrick Mahomes acknowledged that Alex Smith helped with mentorship and it was vital towards the Chiefs winning the Super Bowl:

“He texted me right after the game, saying he enjoyed it just as much as we did,” Mahomes said, via ESPN.com. “He wasn’t there, but he was part of it — I think that’s the biggest thing. He built the culture that I came into. He was the guy that led the team to all these successful seasons and built that winning culture.”

Will the Chiefs actually give Alex Smith a Super Bowl ring? There is no denying that Smith was crucial. Let’s also mention the fact that Alex Smith gave the Chiefs Kendall Fuller who was their best corner and a third round pick. That pick turned into Derrick Nnadi who is a valuable piece for their defensive line. It will be interesting to see if KC actually gives Smith a ring.

There is no denying that Mahomes has taken the Chiefs to levels that Alex Smith never could have. If we’re being honest, Jim Harbaugh and Andy Reid saved Smith from becoming a downright bust and totally out of the league. It was close to happening.

In the meantime, KC gets to enjoy the Super Bowl and has the face of the league in their hands for the foreseeable future. The future of the Kansas City Chiefs has never been brighter. This won’t be the last Super Bowl the Chiefs are in. Does Alex Smith deserve 1 percent of the credit?
