Andy Reid: Chiefs Capable Of Winning With Alex Smith

Head Coach Andy Reid confirmed that Alex Smith is his franchise quarterback (John David Mercer-USA TODAY Sports)

Can the Kansas City Chiefs ever win a Super Bowl with Alex Smith as their quarterback? Head coach Andy Reid seems to think so. Despite the 18-16 loss to the Steelers in the Divisional playoffs, coach Reid hasn’t lost faith in his signal caller.

“Do I still think we can win with Alex? Yeah, we were right there,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said of his starting quarterback on Monday, per Terez Paylor of The Kansas City Star.

Reid is right about one thing, they are right there. If it weren’t for a holding call on a successful 2 point conversation attempt, that game goes into overtime. In fairness to Alex Smith, his receivers didn’t provide much help in the loss to Pittsburgh. Travis Kelce had 34 yards prior to the last drive and Tyreek Hill finished the game with just 27 yards. Realistically the Chiefs need a lot of help along the offensive line as Alex Smith faced a ton of pressure the entire night.

Alex Smith did win 12 games during the regular season but he probably won’t ever be able to lead the Chiefs to the Super Bowl without additional help. The good news is the Chiefs have drafted very well since Reid’s arrival in 2013.
