Padres Closer Mark Melancon Has An Interesting Side Hustle
Mark Melancon has come up in some pretty big spots. He’s a three-time All-Star closer with the ability to easily record the final three outs of a ballgame. He was dependable for Pittsburgh, Washington, San Francisco, Atlanta, and now, the exciting San Diego Padres. One thing a lot of people aren’t familiar with is the fact that the 36-year-old is basically ready for his days after playing baseball.
Landscaping is now one of Melancon’s true callings. He already has a say in it as well, establishing his company called Diamond Turf. What his company does is install turf for homes. This can include home mini-golf courses, trampolines as well as just beautiful green grass for backyards.
The idea started when installing green in his backyard and being unsatisfied with the results. With his brother-in-law Gerardo, they started fresh and were able to capitalize on what their dream greenery would be. It has blossomed to 20 members including fellow Major League Outfielder JB Shuck. Shuck is now a full-time worker as a sales rep for the company after opting out of a Minor League deal.

Melancon loves his side gig as a landscaper so much so, he wears shirts promoting his product. In no way, however, does he want his Major League notoriety to be the leading cause of his sales. He wants to sell the product for how good the quality it is and express how much artistic time and effort goes into landscaping. He does it for the passion.
