Add another name to the list of people that think Victor Wembyama is overrated. Dave Portnoy is one of them. Our own Griffin Crest is another. For NBAer Olden Polynice is the next. If you ask Polynice, he believes Wemby will have a career similar to what Shawn Bradley was. AKA a big time bust.
Fox Sports’ “The Odd Couple” with Chris Broussard and Martin Weiss:
“He hopes to be better than Shawn Bradley in my opinion,” Polynice said of Wembanyama. “I’m serious … I’m not even putting him in Yao Ming category.”
Polynice thinks Wemby will have a really tough time transitioning to the NBA level.
“(Gregg) Popovich is gonna put him in the right situation, I know that, but instinctively he’s gonna wanna bring the ball up,” Polynice said. “Pop is not going to let a 7’5” guy bring the ball up, I don’t care what anybody’s saying right now.
“It’s that marriage – the honeymoon. We’re all in the honeymoon phase, okay? He hasn’t had a two-week road trip. He hasn’t done any of this stuff so he doesn’t know what to expect.”
Conventional wisdom would tell you that a 7-foot-4 demi-god that can shoot and defend at a high level will find a way to figure it out. however, if I’m going to play devil’s advocate, there have been some red flags thus far. For starters, anyone that admires Russell Westbrook has something wrong with them. Wemby is also banned from the weight room, which still makes zero sense. Those two things are definitely a cause for concern.
Still, the bar to clear Bradley isn’t very high. Bradley averaged 8.1 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks per game during his 12-year career. Wemby would be viewed as a complete failure if he can’t top those numbers.
