It has been a rough couple of years for Nicco Montano, and this is just another example.
The former UFC Flyweight Champion missed weight by a whopping seven pounds yesterday for a scheduled fight between her and Wu Yanan. The fight was called off of the card, leaving fight fans with a sour taste in their mouths. Nicco Montano was once dubbed as the future of the Women’s Flyweight division but has been stuck in the middle of a massive rough patch recently in her career. Montano released this statement through her Instagram in regards to her failed weight cut.
“I was dedicated through camp to this fight, training four hours a day, including my fasted 4-5 mile runs and unfortunately after years of cutting hard my metabolic system is not catching up with what efforts I’ve been putting in,” Montano wrote. “So I’ve been eating less for my workout sessions, training up until I had to come to the quarantine bubble and had to start my cut pretty high.
“I have done this cut before but unfortunately it just didn’t work out this time around. I think the most important thing for me to do is focus on getting my weight down healthily. Believe me I didn’t want this to happen and did everything in my power to make sure it didn’t but sometimes life kicks you in the balls over and over and over. But I’m learning that it’s only making me stronger and more resilient for what’s to come.
“And I only hope that anyone going through a rough patch in their loves does what I do, pick yourself up and believe in yourself to get through the tough times because there’s gonna be plenty more but patience is key in becoming the best version you can be.”
This failed weight cut is just another rough patch in her career, which includes weight cut issues that forced her out of a flyweight title fight with Valentina Shevchenko at UFC 228 and a bout with COVID-19 that forced her to withdrawal from a bout with Julia Avila this past August. With her recent string of tough luck, it might be time to consider hanging up the gloves just like Paul Felder did earlier this year. There is no shame in admitting when you don’t have anything left.
