The Ultimate Fighter 29 aired its 6th episode last week, and it was one of the best yet. Last week’s episode featured a bantamweight matchup between Ricky Turcios and Dan Argueta. The episode started off with a classic coach on coach prank. Brian Ortega took the wheels off of Volkanovski’s car and left him with some donkeys to get home. Volkanovski was a good sport about it, but I am sure he will return the favor later this season.
Ricky Turcios is taking on Dan Argueta in a bantamweight showdown to see who will get a spot in the next round. Dan Argueta is a jiu-jitsu style fighter who loves to get takedowns and finish fights. Turcios is more of a striker who loves a firefight, so this matchup should be very interesting to see. Of the now six fights on The Ultimate Fighter 29, this one has made me the most excited by far. Contrasting styles and two dudes who love to fight makes for a great matchup.
The beginning of the fight showcased a striking battle. Each man was trying to get inside and land power shots. Turcios, who had the reach advantage, was getting pieced up on the inside, so he adjusted and tried to keep the fight at a distance. Argueta shot for a takedown halfway through the first round, but Turcios was equal to the task and stuffed it. After stuffing the takedown, Turcios started finding his mark on the feet, mixing in kicks and punches very well. Argueta attempted a guillotine with a minute left but could not sink it in all the way. I had Argueta winning round one 10-9, but it was a close round from start to finish.
The fight quickly turned into a firefight at the beginning of round 2, with both fighters throwing massive shots and looking for the knockout. Turcios was getting tagged early in the round but quickly found his groove and started throwing combinations left and right. Turcios clearly won the 2nd round, which meant the fight would go to a sudden death third round.
The Ultimate Fighter 29 Episode 6 gave us a much-needed 3 round fight. Turcios came out for round three like a bat out of hell. He picked up right where he left off in round 2 and started tagging Argueta with everything. Turcios got a takedown and went for a few submissions, but none of them sunk in, so he went to some ground and pound. Turcios won round 2 without a doubt and took home the victory, getting a huge win for Team Volkanovski.
Tune in for my recap of The Ultimate Fighter 29 Episode 7, which features a middleweight scrap between Brady Hiestand and Josh Rettinghouse.
