2022 Fantasy Football Breakout Candidates: Week 5
It’s Week 5 of the 2022 NFL season, beginning with a Thursday night football matchup between two struggling teams in the Denver Broncos and the Indianapolis Colts. There hasn’t been a lot of fantasy football glory out of any of those two teams, but in the meantime, let’s discuss some fantasy breakouts for this week! But first, how’d we do in Week 4?
- Michael Carter, RB, Jets: 9 car., 15 yards; 2 rec., 14 yards
- Marquez Callaway, WR, Saints: 3 rec., 53 yards
- Gabe Davis, WR, Bills: 1 rec., 13 yards
- Russell Wilson, QB, Broncos: 17-25, 237 yards, 2 TDs
- George Pickens, WR, Steelers: 6 rec., 102 yards
Yikes! Not a great week, although we finally got a QB right for once? You win some, you lose some. A slight step back makes room for an even greater comeback!
Now let’s hop into Week 5!
Tyler Allgeier, RB, Atlanta Falcons
Allgeier was a popular fantasy pickup this week, and for good reason. Cordarrelle Patterson is officially on injured reserve, and Allgeier plus Caleb Huntley is expected to carry the load in the backfield for the next four weeks, at least. Allgeier has been on the field the most among the Falcon backup tailbacks through the first four weeks, so one could assume he will be again on Sunday. The Tampa front seven is no joke, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Allgeier breaks one or two loose in Arthur Smith’s zone run scheme.
Chris Godwin, WR, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Godwin, who’s coming off multiple lower body injuries, logged 10 targets (seven catches) for 59 yards in Tampa’s 41-31 loss to the Chiefs. No Tampa receiver has logged more receptions (173) since Brady’s arrived; only Mike Evans has more receiving yards (2,276 to 2,037) in seven more games. I’m expecting Godwin to even receive higher volume against Atlanta this upcoming week.
Hunter Henry, TE, New England Patriots
Okay, this might a little bit of a long shot. No, I have not suffered any head injuries lately. Yes, I’d consider myself perfectly healthy at the moment. Henry has logged only five receptions through four games for 41 total yards, only being targeted nine times. New England is expected to utilize the heck out of the run game with Damien Harris and Rhomandre Stevenson against a porous Lions defense. But don’t be surprised if rookie quarterback Bailey Zappe finds a way to get Henry a few receptions — especially in red zone opportunities — against Detroit Sunday. He had nine touchdowns last year and 18 over the last three years. He’s due for a breakout week.
Mike Boone, RB, Denver Broncos
Another “close your eyes and hope you hit the dart board” pick, I know. I don’t expect many to start Boone Thursday, unless you’re in a very deep league with at least one or two injuries to your running backs. But Boone made the most of his four touches this last week and is expected to have an increased role alongside newly-signed Latavius Murray and Melvin Gordon, who’s had ball security troubles through four weeks. If he gets enough run, Boone could break out in Week 5.
Dalvin Cook, RB, Minnesota Vikings
Is it weird to have one of the league’s highly-touted backs as a “fantasy breakout”? It shouldn’t be, but Cook has barely cracked the top-25 for running backs in standard and PPR formats through four weeks. He’s only had one rushing touchdown and hasn’t logged more than 15 points in either format. Against against a bottom-third run defense in Chicago, it’s possible that Cook could breakout in Week 5.
